Patagonia straddles both Chile and Argentina and is located at the southernmost point of South America, closest to Antarctica. There are trails and activities within both accessible sides, each giving you a different view and experience. You have to make reservations way in advance if you want to snag a dedicated camping spot or cabin bed, as they limit the number of people entering the park each day. There are two trails in this park for trekking and hiking, the W Trail which extends along the southern half of the park, or the O Trail which takes you through the entire park (including the W trail) and you may choose to hire a guide if you wish, though not necessary.

You arrive at the west entrance and take the bus a bit further in and you're greeted by a cute little cabin café and already incredible view of Lago Pehoe. The 45 minute wait there for the ferry, one of the two ways to get into this section of the park, leaves your imagination running as you stare out at water so ice blue, the greenest rolling hills you’ve ever seen and snow capped mountains. The nerves and excitement start setting in, more nerves because you didn't prepare or train at all for this trek and have never attempted anything relatively close. Little do you know the next 5 days are going to be some of the hardest you’ve ever experienced, hiking 46 miles west to east while carrying 20 pounds throughout the entire trek battling with wind, rain, or sun...at some points all three at once.

Once the ferry drops you off it's go time, you're officially inside the park where all the fun happens. First off, you stop to grab a snack, adjust all of your gear, and remove some layers - it's quite a bit warmer than you had anticipated as sunrays strongly beat down with no sign of shade to be seen. After applying sunscreen it's time to start your first hike up the west side, the end goal being to see the famous glacier by the end of day, one of the largest on the planet. The start of the path seems pretty easy and flat, if the entire trail is going to be this level of difficulty you'll do just fine, but soon enough after half an hour into the trail the story completely changes as terrain becomes more difficult and rollercoaster altitude is constant. About 2 hours into the trail, there's a great outlook with the first peek at a giant iceberg to stop for a quick rest and snap a few photos. Looking up you spot 2 condors (the national bird) slowly soaring high above, as if they have duties to monitor the park. It's understood that it's a rare occasion to see a condor so making the time to sit and appreciate them hunting high above sounds like the best idea. Once they decide to move along, you do too and continue on for another 3 1/2 hours close to the cliff’s edge with a lovely view of the winding blue lake. Your feet are really starting to bark and just when the thought of sitting down comes to mind, you round the corner and realize you've made it to the first campground for the night at Refugio Grey!

Once a bit more rested and checked in, the attendant leads you over to your fully stocked tent for the night with glorious mountains in the backdrop. There were 2 time slots for dinner and choosing the latter, you decide to dart up the reminder of the trail just a bit further to see the mighty glacier before turning in for the night. After only a few minutes you arrive at a spectacular viewpoint and decide to scale up a rocky hillside to catch the best views. Wind is fierce atop the hill, but it’s all worth it as Glacier Grey sits unbelievably breathtaking right in front of you spanning over 28 kilometers in length; even from the higher viewpoint it takes over both the landscape and mind. Your body is still in shock and the first day is settling in now, after getting a fill of one of the most grandiose sights in the world it's time to head back to the refugio for a sit down 4 course meal complete with fresh bread, a must at every meal and a necessity to fuel your body for the intense output you’re exerting through the park.

Day two is the reverse of day one, trekking back down the west side on the same trail to return to where you started the journey to stay the night at a refugio favorite, Refugio Vertice Paine Grande. The morning starts off nicely, but mist soon appears as you leave the campsite. You've overheard some fellow trekkers talking about rain, and although you're on the same path for the second day in a row, the experience turns out totally different. You notice more details about a few small waterfalls that weren’t recognized yesterday and visibility is still fairly decent. About half way into the trail a stop is necessary to devour the sack lunch that was given to you at breakfast and the same viewpoint overlooking Lago Grey once again seems like the best choice. While enjoying your dry tuna sandwich and personal portion of nuts, rain decides it's going to make a grand entrance, at first ever so lightly more intense every minute. After swallowing what food remains you throw on a rain jacket and quickly move along as the wind has joined the rain, the only way to avoid getting completely soaked is to keep your head down. It feels like much longer than 2 hours as the battle with the diagonal rainfall has been rough, but you reach the familiar stretch and realize the refugio is finally in eyesight! A wave of relief washes over you and you hurry to the finish line. After settling into the dorm and bundling up after a well deserved hot shower you realize the last 2 days of hiking are starting to catch up to your body and a harsh realization comes to mind - this is the last chance to decide to leave the park before there is no way out other than walking out.

The next two days become a painful blur. As you make your way deep into the park on Tuesday, different elements present themselves and intensity increases. Crossing suspension bridges over wide mouthed roaring falls with ice cold water feels like something you'd see on a movie as you make your way toward Mirador Frances, peering down on the water watching it take anything new in its path. Once arriving at the foot of the trail that leads up to Frances, there's a campsite to leave your pack while climbing to the viewpoint. With a total elevation gain of 1,801 feet through forest and rocky mountainside, a much welcomed 360 view of the French valley and baby blue Lago Pehoe, the view is well worth all the pain getting there; Glaciers fit snug in between mountain crevices and small waterfalls, snow capped summits, the greenest hillside eyes have ever seen as clouds hover above. It's a surreal view, something only seen in magazines or movies until now. Again having a dry sandwich and snacks while resting up for the descent down while being constantly pushed by the ferocious icy cold wind, you take your necessary photos and videos and soak it all in so deeply to permanently imprint it into your memory. After climbing back down at a faster rate than going up, you grab your bag after a quick rest and continue along the trail toward Refugio Los Cuernos. At this point in the trek joints are beginning to give sharp signals and it's possible to cause serious injury any moment from here on.

The park has a span of ecological zones: Andean desert, steppe, forest, and shrublands making the park home to a vast amount of life, including pumas. Day four you begin along a new lake's elevated side trail and spend most of the day walking through expansive grassy rolling plains with cow manure, mud, and gusts strong enough to put you on your rear. Managing the wind is much trickier than it seems, stopping every few minutes to brace oneself in order to keep boots grounded. The atrocity pushes and pulls you along for the entire day, giving painful windburn to any skin left exposed. Refugio Chileno, the favorite refugio of them all, is the end goal for the day and you may try to ascend to Torres del Paine IF weather permits. Weather in Patagonia is crucial for your time in the park and dictates if you will have a pleasant or visible hike, each campsite has very detailed weather information for the next 5 days posted on a bulletin board that’s updated each day, including wind direction, temperature, rain/snowfall percentages, and more.

This refugio is really special and hard to book, it sits on the path up to the Torres del Paine saving you half the time on the trek up, but making the previous day longer. Horses are used to deliver necessities to the refugio such as kegs, paper toiletries, and food ingredients. Once you arrive after 5 ½ hours, you've had sand thrown in your face, knees and ankles so badly swollen and stabbing joint pains, you decide it's best to check the weather for the last leg of the trip to see if you can push it to the next day. Looking at the weather forecast, it seems as if it's going to be clear in the morning with lighter winds before a storm rolls in early afternoon, the decision to wait until tomorrow is settled and you rest up having a few drinks instead. At dinner with friends made along the way, it’s confirmed to attempt an ascent starting at 4am to see the Torres before day break.

The final day has finally come for better or worse. Since the hike up to Torres del Paine has been pushed for day break it’s imperative to not fall behind schedule much since you have a bus ticket this afternoon. Waking up after not enough hours of sleep and the shooting pain still accompanying, you run a little behind and miss the opportunity to join the group, but instead leave about 30 minutes behind them. It is so quiet you could hear a pin drop, pitch black, perfectly still, with little bird songs here and there, greeting those awake a good morning. The hike starts off nice and flat, going through what seems to be some type of forest, you can’t see anything other than what the headlamp is exposing right in front of you. After trailing over numerous wooden bridges, you start to feel the climb kicking in, it’s time to switch gears and get moving. The sun is providing more and more light as you start making the way up and suddenly the trail is right next to the side of the cliff, you’re now above the treetops and the sunrise is in view, an incredible moment and much needed boost! There are rumors this trail is the most difficult of them, with a total climb of 2,956 feet up getting there is very strenuous; majority of the major ascend there are giant rocks everywhere you have to scramble through; there’s no way around them, if you can’t make it through you won’t see the view. After scrambling for some time a joint has had its fill and is telling your body not to go any further. Every step is incredibly painful, as if someone is stabbing you with a knife. No amount of weight released on the hiking poles is helping anymore; you thought it may get better overnight with rest but that’s not the case, but you didn’t come here and get all this way to miss the most special view that only a limited number of people are able to see, so you push through. What is finally spotted behind the enormous boulders is astonishing and gives you just enough excitement to make it to the finish line. Towering rocks give a grand stature above frosty blue water as frigid wind starts to blow in. It’s extremely cold after resting a few minutes and refueling with some homemade pan de pascua, so you quickly go jump on the large rock in the water, take a few photos to show off your prize back at home, and start back.

The descent down isn’t any easier than the ascend, the wind is horrendous by this point and since you’re at a higher elevation you have to stop and take cover behind a boulder every few minutes in order to avoid being pushed down or over to the side of the cliff. The pain hasn't worn off but at least you’re much quicker, even with other elements of nature working against you. The remainder of the trekking on this last day is all downhill to the bottom, where the buses will pick you up and your journey will be complete. As you make the way down it’s a bittersweet next few hours. Sitting in the station resting and waiting along with all of the other people that you’ve been along with on this journey is quite special as everyone reminisces and tells stories to those beside who have experienced it. As you board the bus and find your seat with complete exhaustion, you think of how lucky you are to have been able to accomplish this, but how extremely grateful you are to be leaving as you close your eyes.

Traveling over wasn’t so bad, even with the change of planes you were able to cash in on double the kind smiles from Hawaiian Airlines’ flight attendants and double the complimentary over sweetened mai tais. The plane immediately introduces you to a very small part of island culture but as you exit the aircraft a whiff of saltwater and seaweed smack you in the face giving you a very personal welcome. You’ve been dreaming of this trip FOR MONTHS and it feels a bit unreal you’ve finally arrived. On the first day here it’s a given to stop and get some good eats, and see a few sights as you gently become familiar with the surroundings - like this cute little lighthouse you spot from afar, local fisherman teaching their young ones to fish, chickens and nene’s roaming freely, horses grazing in a large pasture while the sun sets behind, and secret secluded beach with wooden swing and knotted rope hanging from tree branches reaching over the ocean. In this short time of being on the island the experience already feels like something you’d only see in a movie. And to imagine it can only get better.

After getting settled into the place you’ll call home for the next 10 days and realizing there are lots of little critters joining you during your stay (loud bugs, noisy birds, & most importantly giant spiders the size of your head - you measured from the safe side of the glass) there’s no more time to waste, it’s about time you get out there and start exploring! First up it’s decided to take a helicopter ride to learn more about the dreamy island itself and take it all in from above, before you two get more acquainted of course. Your heli pilot was born and raised on the islands and knows a great deal of fun facts and knowledge to pass along. You float by the famous waterfalls (along with many others) from Jurassic Park, making childhood dreams come true. As he describes history, erupting volcanoes, and lays of the land, the copter winds up and down, through and between the canyons, squeezing through the lush bright green vegetation and vibrant dirt colors that collide into one, eventually popping out over the indigo blue ocean. The water is so crystal clear you can see reef shadows from your seat!

Food on Kauai is really great, to say the least, but also expensive, even when shopping at the grocery store. There is an amazing ice cream and coffee shop on Kauai called Lappert’s Hawaii; their tropical, coffee, and chocolatey flavors have lines reaching out of the doors in every location. Although they have some great ice cream and coffee, Hawaiians are known for their shaved ice concoctions, roast pork, poke plates, and taro. Taro is a sacred crop of Hawaii, and tied to Hawaiian’s belief of creation. It’s also a crop that’s plentiful, but poisonous unless cooked. You’re on the north shore one day and stop by a food truck on the way to Hanalei called Holy Grail Donuts and quickly realize everyone should visit this truck because WOW, these are the most incredible donuts ever tasted, especially the vegan taro donut! The consistency is soft yet dense, with a hint of sweetness but just the right amount! There are a lot of tourist traps in terms of restaurants - you know because you’ve been to a few - so you try to stay as local as possible given the circumstances for the remainder of the trip.

Later in the week you join a boat excursion out to the depths of the big blue, a half day experience of admiring tan, brown, blue, green, and white coastal lines once more, but from a perspective quite the opposite than before. First stop of the day after sailing out, everyone grabs a snorkel and dives right in to play with every color of fish imaginable and giant turtles who look to be at least 100 years old. A turtle slowly floats by, curious to see what you’re up to as they pass, convincing you to attempt to swim alongside him for as long as possible as he glides further into the vast darkness. Once everyone is full of salt water and ready to retreat aboard the journey continues. Lunch is served mid-day which is nothing special; sandwiches and adult beverages…bonus: you’re welcome to eat and drink as much as you’d like. Shortly after the boat takes off you spot bottlenose & spinner dolphins swimming parallel and not just a couple, about 10 of them at once! Running down to the bottom level of the boat and jumping on the back netting getting as close as possible, a handful playfully coast up and down racing to keep ahead as the boat flies further down the coast. After a slow down to point out some movie shot locations and beautiful cliff views it’s time to turn around and head back to dock, I suppose this magical moment wasn’t meant to last forever. Suddenly a breaching humpback whale and her baby off in the distance emerging their heads and fins above water showing off before disappearing indefinitely, and soon enough the dock is within sight. What an experience, can the trip get any better than this!?

Luau’s are good for explaining a touch of the history and traditions of Hawaii complete with a traditional dinner. Kalua Pa’a (the roasted pork) is prepared in a special way: in the morning the pig is killed and brought back, prepared, and then lowered by two men into the ground stuffed with hot stones, covered in banana leaves and dirt and left to cook for many hours. Once you arrive for the luau experience, the men lift the pig out of the underground oven and demonstrate the process to the crowd who will consume it. After dinner, music, and drinks it’s time to head over to the hula show where many different kinds of hula are performed from all over the world, with history memos as dancers perform onstage.

Hanalei is your most beloved piece of the island of Kauai. It’s quiet, seems to be more localized, and a little slice straight from heaven. The best coffee and breakfast on the island are also here right on the main road at Hanalei Bread Company. Farmers Markets are held every weekend where you can grab an ice cold coconut at the small but friendly community center, which hosts other events and school for kids. The sweetest local couple, Doug & Sandy McMaster, hold live concerts here where they play traditional slack key guitar & ukulele together and narrate how their songs are born in between - the most relaxing music that engulfs the room with peace.

The surf at Hanalei Bay is perfect for beginners, yet the water is calm enough to swim and the water temp is perfect, not too cold, not too warm. It’s your choice to either rent a board or hire an instructor and after thinking it through, some help may be needed before being released into unpredictable waters. Once instructed you take the first rolling wave and right away you’re able to stand up, it’s a complete rush of energy and ego, you can conquer the ocean! Paddling back out for the next set you realize it’s not quite as easy as it seemed. Time after time you continue to fall until finally, about 45 minutes later you’re able to ride the wave back to shore realizing that surfing is a few things: challenging, meditative, and addicting. You’ve never felt anything like it before.

Hiking in the rain is pretty common and very refreshing, a bit chilly and muggy yet neither overpowering and the wet cool droplets seem to cleanse both your soul and body as you internally warm with movement. Almost every hike you complete has some sort of moisture making it a messy one, the trail is usually muddy if nothing else, which is the case while hiking the Awa’awapuhi Trail, a trail that totals over 5 miles leading you to a cliff’s edge overlooking the ocean smacked in between 2 towering cliffs. Along the gray and overcast climb down (with the occasional peaking sun ray), you spot trees with yellow, green, and orange colored bark while slipping along slopes of mud, praying you don’t add another bruise to the collection. While climbing down you suddenly feel a joyful sensation, and your thoughts start wandering to how beautiful life is and how much you enjoy living it with your partner. Life just can’t get any better than this. The trail must be special because it doesn’t seem to be over trafficked but celebrations of all kinds seem to take place with each passerby greeting you on their way back up with a warm, friendly smile and an updated weather forecast, since your partner has been asking every passing group since you started the hike. Why does he care that much anyway? Once you reach the bottom, there’s a sketchy extension of the trail that drops on both sides of large boulders framing the trail, and other hikers have successfully made it down. The group wants to go over there, but you’re too scared. Once convinced to make your way over to the small opening past the slim slice that was honestly quite terrifying, your entire body is shaking. A hug from your partner calms you down, and just as you’re starting to feel less on edge, he’s turned to face you and has that look in his eyes that only you know. NO WAY, IT CAN'T BE HAPPENING. NO WAY! You start to black out as you’re in utter shock, saying you don’t believe him and it’s not real, but next thing you know he’s down on one knee. Somehow within all those emotions running high, you managed to hear one sentence that was probably the most important anyway, and of course say yes! Everyone around claps and you spend the next few moments re-collecting yourself and enjoying the special moment with the one you love most. Once you trek back over to the mainland and head back up, another couple asks if you care for a glass of wine to celebrate. Showers in the spring are plentiful and shortly after there’s almost always a rainbow. Driving back to the North Shore beside the colorful canyons, you spot a full rainbow in an opening as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” plays through the car speakers.

One of the highly encouraged hikes is the Sleeping Giant, but it’s said it’s best done before sunrise, so you decide to say aloha to the island with a morning hike. As you’re climbing up to the top in the darkness with your flashlight shining bright the sun follows suit, peaking over the horizon showing off its golden colors and granting a good morning to all. The ambiance gives you the room to reflect on life and just how amazing this entire trip has been, really unlike any other experience. This will always be a trip to remember.

You decide to take advantage of a long holiday weekend and take a short 3 hour flight to one of the loveliest cities to date. Once you land at the international airport (the only time you’ll experience less than joyful Canadians) it’s extremely easy to take the train into downtown Vancouver, just follow the signs to the station right outside the terminal for an easy 30 minute ride. The city is sold out due to a few big events taking place, so it’s necessary to change hotels after the first night, but you soon find you prefer it that way in order to be immersed into different neighborhoods. First stay is in Yaletown, as soon as you emerge from the underground train station you are greeted by the warm-tone bricks and gentle sunshine feeling like a friendly hello hug. It’s still early morning so there isn’t too much bustle on the streets yet, there’s plenty of time to soak in the sunshine. Once checked into Opus Vancouver, a vibrant, quirky hotel, it’s time to walk a few blocks and find a good spot for brunch. After maybe 10 minutes you run into the cute and quaint Homer Street Café & Bar, where the head chef is fervently and continuously calling out orders down the line as you sit and enjoy the bustle and both smells of breakfast wafting through the air and tastes of coffee, benedict, and brunch style poutine (the unofficial national dish).

Now that you’ve fueled up there’s a few hours to spare. Since there are a limited number of days for this trip and the weather is unusually sunny for Vancouver it’s a situation that must be taken advantage of so you make your way down to the closest pier to catch a ferry over to Granville Island Public Market. Sights from the ferry are breathtaking and it’s well worth the money spent both for the short ride and view. Once on land again and walking into the market it hits you just how huge this place must be. With only a few hours available it’s almost known before even beginning to pick one of the many boutique stores to pop in, that there will not be enough time to get through it all. It’s a shame once you realize how cute and unique each store is, but you do your best to visit as many as possible and find a few things to bring home along the way.

Before you know it you are heading to a country concert with a couple artists playing before the main act, Luke Combs. At one point in the night everyone turns on their phone flashlights and waves them through the air, speckles of light swaying around filling the stadium. Who knew so many Canadians were country music fans, seats have filled up the entire BC Place Stadium with over 50,000 seats! After singing your vocal chords out all night long it’s time to head back and get a good night’s rest.

Next morning you wander down on another sun-shiny day just a few blocks to another spot in Yaletown near the marina for some French breakfast. There are so many great grub options around, it seems like just about everything “worthy” is in or near the area. After another smart foodie decision it’s time to head on over to the new digs up a bit north in Waterfront District, a true five star experience at the Fairmont Pacific Rim. Once situated in your phenomenal waterfront view room, you run down to rent some bikes from the hotel and take a few hours cruise before sunset into and around Stanley Park, riding along the seawall soaking in such incredible views of forest, mountains, and city while scents of sea and salt sail through your nose. Stanley Park is HUGE with most of the land remaining forested. There are all kinds of activities once in the park like trails, tennis courts, public swimming pools and more not discovered. Riding a bike around the park will stir up a sweat and appetite in anyone so a stop at Stanley Park Brewing is a must for some refreshing beer tasting and hearty bites. Feeling replenished and a second wind of energy coming up, it’s time to finish the trail and head back.

Once you arrive it’s time to do more hotel exploring to see just what this place is all about. A grand entrance does not disappoint with water features and flower walls surrounding both sides of the doorway, and walking into the lounge to the left is a generous space filled with a baby grand piano, cozy fireplace, and bar seating moving toward the back; a florist and custom jewelry store to the right and glancing upstairs you see one of the restaurants, Botanist, where you’ll be having breakfast and choosing the ABSOLUTE BEST crab cake benedict you have ever had in your life. Just across the way from the restaurant there’s a special collection of art, curated specifically for the hotel complete with complimentary audio guide to walk you through each piece and its purpose.

After winding down with a relaxing eucalyptus rainfall shower it sounds lovely to just stay put, order a little sweetness from in-room dining and pop a bottle of champagne while soaking in the view and sunset from the comfort of your room. Realizing this is the perfect time to sneak in a little self-reflection time you do just so while indulging the waning cotton candy colors in the sky.

There’s only one full day left in your weekend getaway and rumor has it that Gastown shopping has some of the most unique boutiques and the original Steam Clock is a cool thing to venture over to see and hear its tune. After a beautiful morning trailing through giant trees hundreds of years old atop wooden suspension bridges in the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, you head that way to do just those things, stopping at Purebread along the way to grab a second latte and a few bakery items since they are known for baking some of the best. After getting satisfied with your afternoon snack and popping into a few stores you’re exhausted and ready to meander toward the hotel to grab a bite for dinner, rest, relax and enjoy a night of live acoustic guitar in the lobby.

Waking up from a solid night's rest, unfortunately your time here is coming to an end. It’s time to pack up, have one last lavish breakfast and head towards the airport and say goodbye to this new enchanting land that’s taken a piece of your heart. The only thing missing from this visit was venturing outside the downtown area to experience even more beauty that this wonderful piece of the world has to offer. Once past the gate and taking a moment to get situated, it’s time to make a game plan for the day; you know a long day full of thrills, walking, world famous turkey legs and pineapple dole whip, and lots of standing lies ahead! You decide to start off with a bang going straight to wait 45 minutes for one of the most popular rides in the iconic main park, Space Mountain. The line is a bit long, but Disneyland is known for crazy wait times, and you quickly realize it was much worth waiting for and the rollercoaster lives up to all the hype. Time to explore the park and get a schedule down for the day, leaving time to grab a bite. It’s still early and the energy buzzing through the park remains high.

Star Wars World is the newest addition and everyone agrees to go check it out. As you approach the entrance immediately you spot all the texture and intricately planned details throughout every piece - the hues of brown fabrics, tan rocks with desert aged texture, carved gray stone, hanging metal lanterns and worn exterior paint look incredibly real. The Millenium Falcon towers over you as you walk to do a quick Smugglers Run while Storm Troopers run amok. After attempting to smuggle, a quick pit stop at Oga’s Cantina is much needed for mid-day delicious beverages like The Outer Rim, healthy snacks, and great tunes…but don’t stay too long!

After a few more rides and those famous bites, California Adventure is next up. Crossing over a little later than anticipated you hope to get in as many rides as possible before closing time. Riding a few coasters makes you feel like you’re ahead compared to the other park and seeing the 80 minute wait for Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land is a no-brainer for one of the most popular rides, so you run over to grab a spot in line. Unfortunately not all endings are fairytales and somehow that 80 minute wait turned into two and a half hours. Was it worth waiting that long at the end of the day?….not a chance. Once you hop off the ride, you realize the park is closing for the night. Staying for the fireworks at Disneyland is considered but the re-entrance lines are crazier than when you arrived. Tired from the mental, physical and emotional beating it’s time to grab some classic In-N-Out, head home, and get some much needed rest.

The market veering off to the left offers creamy morning treats and light bites to choose from; or if you rather you may join the others quietly mingling just behind at 1 Kitchen for some healthier options or southern comfort grub. If you’re needing a simple and quick snack go with the hummus - no questions.

Adventuring upstairs to more common space, giant wood pillars both frame and support high ceilings and sweeping downtown views at the rooftop bar and lounge. Collaboration areas are nestled in farthest corners and provide a quieter space to entertain intimate conversation for a cozy experience. If you want to catch a sight and some fresh air, head to the outside patio for tree lined views.

After admiring the landscape you’ve now finished exploring and it’s time to head back downstairs to check in. Once you’re graced with your recycled room key, it’s time to go check out your digs for the foreseeable weekend. As you approach your door it’s easy to recognize more bits of nature on walls and entryways reminding you it’s time to unwind and upon entering that feeling intensifies. An oasis smack dab amidst urban jungle.

If you pay close enough attention you’ll notice all the small details like how large even the standard size room is with sofa and chair to lounge or get some work done, complimentary yoga mat in each room, sand hourglass shower timer to make sure you aren’t wasting water, a triple filtered water tap with all you can drink water, organic linen and cotton fabrics for bedding, up-cycled hangers, quirky napkin inspiration, and some sustainable-minded products to make your stay that much better such as aromatherapy pillow spray or reusable water bottle.

Although stunning and relaxing and to be honest one of the best, the property has its quirks too. As convenient as the property is walking distance to all the action Broadway has to offer, the disturbing noise heard from rooms doesn’t come from the outside chaos, instead it’s the heavy slamming hallway doors and trailing voices that may keep you from a deep sleep, consider this a suggestion to stay farther from the elevator to lessen the issue.

Overall the place is unbeatable. If you’re looking for a sustainable hotel to become loyal to, look no further. You pass by Big Bear Lake and see that people of all walks of life are here to enjoy the weekend as well: fishermen, cyclists, families, campers, and boaters alike. Soon enough, after passing by the water down a ways you find the road shifts from pavement to dirt and suddenly you’re jolted around the seat from one side to another holding on for dear life as bumps rise higher with time. An SUV or truck is definitely needed for these roads, and having 4 wheel drive is a bonus as the Jeep tires crawl along making the ride as smooth as possible. After your amateur driver hits enough humps to feel like it’s going to take out the suspension on the car, the dirt finally smooths out and you find yourself at the secluded campsite, your home for the night.

Once you get the whereabouts - or should we say the tent pitching ground options left and open roof outhouse guarded by horse flies and bees during the day with complimentary pungent smell - it’s time to set up camp and mingle with the crew. As the day passes yet still no chance of surviving the toilet, you wander out into the wild looking for a place to leave your mark, only to learn that propping up bare against a pine tree will result in temporary itching and pain as micro splinters pierce your skin, OUCH never doing that again!

Heading back to the crew a few celebrations are necessary with both birthdays and engagements happening. Winds gently whistle through the soaring trees throughout the day, beers are clinked, corn hole points are debated, yummy tacos are shared and voices carry through the quiet lands all day long. Temperatures start to significantly drop with the sun still high in the sky; it’s time to prepare for nightfall and cook dinner while you still hold on to some daylight, but before you know it sunset is over. A gas fire is started since it’s been too dry to allow a real campfire, and all 13 gather around to tease, gossip, and enjoy a delicious raspberry chocolate birthday cake and hang out a bit longer before calling it a day. The group disperses, settling into their pop up rooms for sleep and as midnight creeps in, winds pick up giving anyone awake an audio experience.

As an early morning riser, it’s time to enjoy the peace of the early day before everyone rises and take a short walk to go explore the bike paths running parallel to the site, pack up and head back down the mountain with a different view overlooking a sea of clouds, smelling sweet perfume scents from wildflowers once more, and a train line of cars in front of you.

As dawn passes you wake up well rested and ready to take on the city; heading downstairs to grab a coffee while smelling the aroma drift through the crisp morning air. Walking and biking are the best options to explore any city to REALLY get familiar with so you decide just that, because after all, it is the “rainy city” yet hasn’t rained! Inquiring for the bikes you find out other guests have taken them for the day so walking it is! The streets of Seattle’s downtown neighborhood see all kinds of characters. Homeless camp and occasionally roam high, doing as they please right as you pass by while any type of musician plays their instruments exposing themselves to the world - or at least the people walking by. Coffee choices are vast and in fact some of the best coffee you’ve ever tasted! Seattle gives such hip, cool, swanky, edgy vibes - a bit like LA but without a pretentious feel. The typical must-sees like the sky high rotating Space Needle, textured & colorful gum wall, Pikes Place (the largest continuously operating market in the US), and the famous Pier area are all no-brainers. Each is lovely in its own way and from the pier you spot Mt Rainier peeking through freshly snow capped all while ferries and sail boats roam the deep blue. It’s easy to find a seat here and escape the crowds, soak in the unique beauty of the mainland, and admire the sun setting down behind the island just across.

A few restaurants on Post Alley were recommended to you by the internet and word of mouth as musts so you plan accordingly. An upscale Italian restaurant you booked for dinner sits just behind a Pink Door with a dining room overlooking the water; it’s said to be more of a local spot. Also there’s BACCO Bistro right down the street, and as you wander that direction for breakfast you spot an hour plus wait with the line stretched around the corner and down the road. Weighing your options to figure it’s worth the wait and once you sit down to fresh squeezed juice options available to order and breakfast plates that leave you stuffed, the wait paid off.

Next up Chihuly Garden and Glass is a whimsical museum full of the artist's finest glass blown work. The moment you enter the first room it takes you on a colorful mind-blowing journey through Chihuly’s history and timeline of projects. Gigantic sculptures hang from the ceiling as chandeliers while others float on water. It’s truly a wonderful and unique experience. Further into the museum and just before entering the gardens you have the opportunity to sit in on a glassblowing demo, which helps put these incredible pieces into perspective and all the work that goes into them. To exit the museum it’s encouraged to walk the path through the garden which is an exhibit of glass blown sculptures emerging from dirt, scaling over waves of tourists and popping out from behind flowers, some resembling live plants. This few hours leaves you feeling like Alice must have felt in Wonderland.

Moving along…Capitol Hill is one of the coolest neighborhoods you stumble upon during this trip. While heading over by foot to find some food you end up at a bike café (they actually repair bikes in the café!). After realizing this isn’t quite what you expected you spot a vegan bistro in the back with mini greenhouses for street dining and decide to go there for both the food and the experience. Alleyways in between here are quaint, and local artist’s work covers full buildings and walls with flashy colors while rainbow flags cover crosswalks, it’s hard not to like. This district moves to its own unique beat.

As you may have heard, a place you may have seen a time or two, our friend Starbucks, was born in Seattle. The original Starbucks is something any coffee lover should experience before leaving, but you’ll have to wait to get in. The designs on merchandise are unlike anything you’ll see in general stores and many products have the original logo which is pretty cool! Grab a cup there on the way out, just to say you did it! 9 blocks away you continue the Starbucks tour to one the largest Starbucks Reserves residing in the Pike/Pine District. Walking in this ginormous space is enough to make you stop and stare. Exposed copper pipes and beams with marble & teak details throughout, multiple counters to order all kinds of choices left out of the ordinary menu…you take it all in. Once you come back to reality, it’s time to order some Italian food and a coffee infused cocktail to rest and enjoy the experience of your last day here.

Another beautiful, sunny morning you wake early to get over to a fabulous local coffee shop in the Business District (discovered during previous walks) called Anchorhead Coffee, to grab a cup before leaving this beautiful city. After indulging in your specialized pastry and cup of joe you’re ready to head to the airport, and decide to take public transport on the way back. Once on the journey to the airport, it’s easy to register how nice it is to take the rail and soak in the views from above one last time. You think yep, i’ll definitely be back for more; this city has SO MUCH to offer and I just barely scratched the surface.

First stopping in the city to grab a bite to eat, as you leave to drive from downtown Ensenada towards the blowhole you pass many pieces of farmland. The flower fields you pass with windows down are covered in a wash of purple and it hits you with such a delicious scent. It must be lavender, ahhhh spring must be around the corner.

Once you arrive at your next stop to see La Bufadora, which has a tiny tiny town with one main road, fully lined streets with vendors filled with faux designer purses, leather goods, candy, ornaments, cowboy attire, souvenirs, and more. The vendors in this region seem to be much more relaxed and less aggressive compared to the Yucatán peninsula, where only the select few call out to you asking for your attention. Stop as you like and continue towards the end of the brick road where you spot what all have come to see - the water spraying and splashing straight up into the blue sky. The movement is so majestic, everyone stops to stare. If you take the time to observe the ocean movement you realize the blow is created by swirling turquoise water coming from all kinds of directions, full of life with a bit of an angry presence, the unique energy is felt from start to end. The wait in between each grand finale is a mere 30 seconds, just enough time to prepare the camera and hope you don’t get wet. If the blow is strong enough water will spray at the end of the trail onto the spectators much like the SeaWorld front row. Once you feel accomplished and start to move along, if you’re hungry there’s plenty of restaurants or snack carts to catch as you make your way back out to hit the wind-y country road back towards the city.

From Ensenada to Valle de Guadalupe it’s only about a quick 20 minute drive. Nothing but clear plots of land are spotted on the way until you get closer to the vineyards. Casa Misiones Glamping is your final destination and as you enter the rural community there’s a mutual understanding that what you’re about to experience is as close to nature without being completely submerged in nature. You drive down a jagged dirt road, the car crawls along the ups and downs with a few right turns through the local residences mixed with resort experiences until the private entrance gate reveals itself. The tents are surrounded by mountains and throughout small hills, each set atop individual wood platforms and spread apart, giving the space and privacy needed. There’s a fireplace outside to use per your request and the rooms are complete with most items you may need during your stay, a super comfortable bed and bedding, mini bar, bathroom necessities including robes, and even a small sitting area for reading or breakfast. The sunset is seen at your tent entrance, and you decide to enjoy the peace and quiet the night will bring. A fire is started, and you enjoy a superb bottle of wine from the minibar, plentiful charcuterie board, and the navy night sky sparkling with stars. To celebrate your arrival, you decide to go check out a hidden jacuzzi at the pool area and stargaze some more.

The peace and stillness you find in the morning is opposite of the chaotic wild nights where coyotes howl and neighborhood dogs go wild. If waking up early is a habit, the quiet morning with sun rising from behind the mountains and gentle warmth sets up the perfect setting for some journaling. Another option to consider when staying with Casa Misiones Glamping, is the breakfast add on, if you choose you may be served breakfast in bed or on your deck, sipping your juice and coffee with the rising sun and excellent traditional huevos rancheros served with fresh fruits. The valley heats up pretty quickly, even in the winter, so taking a quick dip in the infinity pool is highly suggested to cool off before starting any adventures, especially if your car AC has decided to take a vacation during your vacation!

Once you’ve settled into your space for the weekend and are all ready to go it’s time to explore some of the region’s best restaurants and vineyards. Mexico probably has THE BEST food in the world, from what I know and have seen, many of the best chefs in the world either have studied in Mexico or are from Mexico. In Valle there are many different atmospheres creating unique experiences at each destination, the choice is yours. From blaring loud Reggaeton with graffiti on the walls at Kings and Queens, to wine gardens like BRUMA with tree-lined rooftops and giant rock walls dividing rooms, you really can find just about anything here. It seems to be a common theme to have relaxing, yet upbeat tunes playing, very similar to Tulum with a more American twist, and areas dedicated for selfies all whilst designing to compliment the surrounding nature. The rooftop in one of the most popular modern restaurants in the region, La Justina, has cattle feed bags kept in their natural appearance strung amongst string to create an awning protecting diners from direct sunlight, yet still inviting light in to feel comfortable during your experience.

After enjoying some great food, wine, and unique atmospheres over the past few days, it’s time to relax and get a two hour vinotherapy treatment on your last night here over at Quinta Monasterio. Vinotherapy incorporates the residue of wine making and is rubbed onto the skin. The claim is that the pulp has exfoliating qualities which helps reduce aging and that certainly feels to be the case! After you have a quick sauna session and rinse off, your body and face are then lightly scrubbed with the wine product. Once you’re all scrubbed up you rinse off in the outdoor shower with a complimentary Mountain View, returning with baby soft skin for your massage. All relaxed, renewed, and hungry you grab one last fancy dinner at Casa Frida before heading home.

Like everything in life, with the beautiful comes the ugly too. Crossing the border back into the states is a completely different experience from leaving. Thousands of cars snake through the road starting from the entrance pushing all the way back into Tijuana. Hundreds of vendors, including children, walk in between the cars along the entire path selling anything you can imagine - food, chicle, art, jewelry, furniture, even puppies. These people are in such poverty it is utterly heartbreaking to witness. Once you sit through the 2-3 hour line to cross back over (unlike the Sentri pass holders flying past in the next lane) you’re back on US soil, but the experience…it’s left you thinking that there must be something we can all do collectively to help those in need, and I mean actually make a difference. There is a noticeable extreme between rich and poor. According to Statistica, in 2020 approximately 23 MILLION international guests poured into Mexico contributing 1.5 TRILLION pesos (or 71.6 BILLION DOLLARS) so curious to know where is all this money going? Is tourism actually making matters worse?

Scrolling the streets you notice the eco architecture, here it’s so well planned out that even an empty lot of dirt recently chosen for the next hospitality project is so thoughtfully constructed, you take the extra few seconds to pay closer attention to the small important details that make themselves visible. Spotted around the living tree running through the building, a perfectly round hole cut from the deck to house the trunk plummeting through it. Eco friendly hotels, like the one you’re staying in, co-exist between man and nature that require you to follow a path through jungle remains up to your wooden door. Elements of concrete, wood, and naturally woven threads dominate the carefully constructed atmosphere.

The fusion of foods that are readily available are out of this world. From street vendors, regional Mayan restaurants, and 5 star names that come with 5 star experiences, there’s no room for a bad meal. A meticulous fine dining restaurant along the main beach road that represents Tulum well is Bak’ by Harry’s, as you enter you immediately recognize the whimsical ambiance consisting of man-made flower lighting replicas with live plants surrounding and popping through floor to ceiling, incorporating natural architecture throughout its entirety. Here you can order anything from a Tomahawk to tacos while listening to a diverse range of tunes. Good energy is ever present and there’s a celebration had at every table, sparks of light and fire thrown around as if we were celebrating someone’s birthday in Vegas; instead we’re celebrating the good richness of life.

Speaking of that lifestyle, in Tulum resides one of (the infamous) Pablo Escobar’s homes, re-imagined and identified by a fellow Colombian. Walking through the entrance of the property you discover many wedding dresses framing either side of the main entrance to the lobby (once paraded around by Escobar’s many girlfriends) an erotic bath surrounded by tropical plants and the massive original chandelier re-homed into a new outdoor oasis. The hotel lobby is kept in its original conditions with added art; as you stroll in you are slapped with a deep sense of pleasure, sophistication and privacy roaming freely. Gaze up and you eye the well noticed traditional cream colored sofa once belonging to the Titanic, a piece that keeps your gaze for moments and mind in awe. Wander into the private meeting room that’s dark and sexy, the design screaming power and glam. As you leave and walk through the grand entrance gate, you give the wood one last touch knowing you’ve just had a very rare experience.

The small city of Tulum has a very different vibe itself, only 20 minutes away from the beach yet sending you back to reality. Honking horns, as if people are driving in rush hour traffic, constant police activity, conflicting smells wafting the air, vendors at every store entry attempting to coax you in, live music, locals, transplants, & foreigners combined. Here you’ll find both local street market vendor cuisine, fancy west coast coffee bars and the like, and weekly city center night parties calling all salsa dancers.

At some point over the course of the trip, you’re bound to decide to partake in a shopping experience. Many shops line streets and walkways all offering the same souvenirs for practically the same price. High end boutiques line the beach road with exquisite perfume scents and organic fabrics so lovely to the touch - also coming with high end prices - and then you have the hardest working entrepreneurs scaling the city streets, stopping at each tourist-filled spot spilling their best sales pitch to anyone who will listen. Happiness and contentment are contagious here, with a touch of desperation if you choose to notice. Everyone is happy to be alive while praying they make enough pesos to feed their family tonight.

Next you choose to go on a self-discovery adventure to an ancient Temazcal ceremony meant to pull you deep into your inner world, creating new thoughts of self realization, awareness and understanding. Tears are spilled and emotions run high as you sit in a concrete dome resembling the womb of Mother Earth chanting in ancient Mayan language re-envisioning your path here. Smoke fills the concrete dome and creates a natural sauna, a sauna so hot that for some it’s suffocating, while water is poured over lava hot rocks and herbs are used to fan and distribute the trapped moist air creating a strong aroma, its purpose for the body to absorb the healing properties of the herbs, toxins are removed by sweating to renew and purify your body and soul. After the hour and a half ceremony with the shaman, you’ll rinse off in a cool shower and take some personal time to recollect your emotions, thoughts, and realizations before moving on with the day, born again and ready to see life in a new light.

Cenotes are one of God's many gifts in the region and it’s the number one recommendation when visiting, all for good reason. Fresh water fills natural sinkholes creating the most luxurious bath one could ask for, the water temperature for the tropical climate they reside in, is just perfection. The water is so clean and clear you can see well past your feet, drawing curiosity to understand just how deep it really goes and what lives down there. Depending on which of the hundreds you choose to experience you could be repelling down into the perfect turquoise water, cliff jumping into water and minnows, or simply sliding in. Some cenotes also have caves where bats and birds both have made their home, fluttering overhead squeaking and squawking as you swim deeper into the darkness. There is plenty of space once you’re ready to sun bathe and dry off, enjoying sun rays beaming down making a perfectly warm day.

Making a way further west to Ancient Chichen Itza it’s another world of its own, engulfing every tourist there demanding its old world grandeur. If you clap in the perfect spot in front of the main pyramid tigers will roar back. You stare and wonder how the ancients of their size could have ever built columns and buildings this tall without any technology. In this prehistoric community there was a building for everything…from religion, to taxes, markets and trading, and even parties. Mazes of columns and concrete collide with souvenir vendors scattered throughout the entire property spanning over hundreds of unshaded acres.

Once you decide to head a few hours back through the dense, lush jungle there’s even more to explore and soak in, along with all the mega buses crammed with tourists. Let’s briefly stop here at the bustling city of Valladolid full of color, culture, and smiles, for a bite. If you join the rest of the crowd in el centro, you’ll find all kinds of goodies to snack on (elote or churros anyone)? Small children roam trafficked streets selling homemade bread and candy. Regional Mayan food and condiments leave your mouth watering. All while it feels much like a carnival, the city center also hosts a protest, music blaring out of speakers and shouting megaphones, locals demanding to be heard and seen. Life is more relaxed and local, but still heavily focused on tourism. After you’ve filled your belly after your day full of adventure it’s time to head back to paradise for one last hurrah.

Back at the beach you’ll pass strays romping and playing at sunset, sprinting through the wave kissed shore. Baby turtles emerge from their shells, using their best internal compass to make it to the water’s edge. You spend a good amount of time strolling past all the beach front hotels soaking it all in one last time. The beautiful blue-green water is bath water warm and thick seaweed lines the coast as you move parallel with the incoming waves...water at the ocean entrance reaching out begging you to stay.
